True Christians are spiritual people, though the depth of their spirituality may vary based on their experiences and exposure to spiritual matters.
Spirituality is about being open and activated to experience, understand, or do things beyond the physical laws of nature. It involves approaching life from a spiritual perspective and walking in the supernatural. These experiences are only possible with the assistance of spiritual beings. For Christians, the one who empowers us for spiritual matters is the Holy Spirit.
According to God’s design, believers ought to be spiritual people, even though they live in the flesh. We are called to approach life from a spiritual vantage point.
Spiritism vs Christian Spirituality
Spiritism is a practice followed by spiritual individuals known as spiritists. They seek to observe and engage with the spirit realm. Spiritists possess abilities that enable them to navigate life by interacting with unseen forces.
While the idea that allows for spiritism is valid—suggesting that life must be understood through the spirit and that engaging with the spirit realm is essential for a fulfilling life—Christians should refrain from pursuing autonomous spirituality or spiritism.
The spiritual world has existed since creation, but biblical saints and believers were not led into it. Demonic rituals and invitations are needed to access the spirit realm at will.
Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,… Revelations 2:24
The passage above is an excerpt from the letter of John to the Church of Thyatira. It was noted that among them was a teaching that shed light on the deep things concerning Satan. This teaching was abhorrent to Christ, who communicated with John about these matters.
The real issue is not the knowledge but rather how we acquire it. The Bible encourages us to be cautious about the enemy’s tactics. The Holy Spirit also provides insight into the plans, plots, and secrets of the adversary at times.
Gaining an understanding of these secrets is not just valuable; it can help us effectively counteract Satan’s plans. But this knowledge and experience must be guided by the Spirit. When we seek knowledge without the Spirit’s guidance, we risk being misled by evil spirits.
For believers, our spiritual experiences are guided solely by the Spirit of God. We do not have control over what we experience. In other words, we are led to see and experience things beyond the natural realm. This is what I call guided spirituality.
Guided spirituality is a spiritual journey that is supported and contained. Those who are guided do not typically see visions, connect with the spiritual realm, possess knowledge beyond the ordinary, or navigate metaphysical realities unless they are aided.
We are guided by the Holy Spirit, who oversees any influence we exert or receive from the spirit realm.
We know that the Spirit of God operates like a tide. There are seasons when His presence within us is heightened and seasons when it is diminished. During the times when the Spirit of God is more active, we experience greater spiritual events.
Conversely, when His presence is less pronounced, our spiritual experiences are also diminished. When He is dormant, we may lose our spiritual abilities and encounters. This proves that our spiritual experiences are guided.
Also, when believers begin to pray more and the Spirit starts to move in their lives or in the life of the church, spiritual experiences begin to emerge. The more we engage in prayer and worship, the stronger and more frequent our spirituality will become.
When prayer decreases, our experiences begin to fade and evaporate. When sin takes hold of us, we start to lose our connection to spiritual matters, and we cannot do spirituality without Him. These observations remind us that our spirituality is guided.
Spiritists do not rely on prayer to explore their spirituality or to walk in spiritual reality. They do not depend on the strength of a spirit to carry out their enchantments. Once they unlock a channel to spirit reality, they begin to pursue spiritual matters.
The significance of this message lies in alerting believers who may be experiencing spiritual phenomena without a strong connection to the Holy Spirit. Believers must prove their spiritual encounters if they are sponsored by God or by evil spirits.
If our prayer life and holiness seem irrelevant to what we experience spiritually, and if we live in sin while still engaging in spiritual reality, this prompts a critical question: Are these experiences from the Holy God or from the devil?
Or do we not know that the devil also empowers spiritual experiences likened to those from the Holy God? And when spirituality is not of God, it is darkness at play. Let us be well guided.
